Contracts & Salaries

You will be given a contract of employment to sign for each separate speciality attachment. During your hospital attachments you will be employed by the relevant Trust. Any queries relating to salary or terms and conditions of service whilst in hospital posts should be directed in the first instance to the appropriate medical staffing department.

When you are in general practice, you will be employed by the practice. Each training practice is individual but there is a framework that your written contract will be based on which is compiled by the BMA and Committee of General Practice Education Directors (COGPED). Progression through each stage of the training programme is subject to satisfactory performance review by both the Programme and the employing hospital trust or practice.

Speciality trainees are paid a salary based on working 40 hours per week Monday to Friday. If you work more than 40 hours or your core hours are before 7am or after 7pm you receive a supplement which is called a pay band. Different rotations have different levels of banding to reflect the hours of work. Each time you change speciality and are issued with a new contract, the banding payable at the time of issuing the new contract will apply.
