Extra Paid Work

In some circumstances, learners may work extra sessions for remuneration for example as locums in A and E, or sessional work to maintain clinical skills such as minor surgery or coil fitting. However, you need to think very carefully about whether this is appropriate- the key things to consider are:

  • Less than full time learners may not under any circumstances work extra paid sessions
  • Extra sessions must not interfere with your contracted hours in your GP training post or upcoming posts
  • The additional hours that you work must not take you above EWTD hours – it’s your responsibility to ensure this
  • You must be fulfilling all the required WPBA including e portfolio entries and assessments
  • Before agreeing to work extra sessions you must discuss this with your ES and a PD, and obtain their agreement that it is feasible for you to work these extra hours without having an adverse effect on your training
  • You are not allowed to work any extra paid sessions in a GP practice or to do GP locums , until you have obtained your CCT
  • You must declare any extra work on your form R which is submitted to the deanery each year

As always, we would be happy to discuss this in more detail – please contact Stella in the first instance and she will be able to arrange a time for us to talk.
